Walking Trail along Arkansas River

While Fort Smith National Historic Site is an urban park, it has opportunities to enjoy beautiful scenery and wildlife. A paved walking trail takes you along the confluence of the Arkansas and Poteau Rivers. Pick up a tree guide at the Visitor Center to identify the trees along the way.

Many birds nest in the park or can be seen as they migrate.

The Arkansas and Poteau Rivers are beautiful to look at, but they are unsafe to swim in.  Take care near the water's edge.

Also, due to the nearness of the rivers, poisonous snakes have at times been seen in the tall grass. Caution your family accordingly.
